Project Info
The summer between my junior and senior year I attended the Syracuse University industrial design summer program. In this program I was challenged to think of the basics and understand the fundamentals of design. This product came from a partner design challenge to build a functional chair out of cardboard that can hold the weight of a human. The focus of our design was durability. We knew that laminating pieces of cardboard would be a lot more sturdy, than creating columns like (cylinders or triangles) out of hollow cardboard. We created a simple chair shape, with slanted edges which would allow more comfort for the user. We cut out a master stencil, then simply traced multiple pieces on cardboard and cut out, pieces so it would be efficient to manufacture. The chair is roughly made out of 150 laminated pieces of cardboard.
