Project Info
The summer between my junior and senior year, I was an Intern for the San Francisco based architecture firm, BCV. While there, I designed and modeled five tabletop lamps that will be used in five of the new the tasting rooms at the Napa based winery, Cakebread Cellars. I was part of the design team for the plans for the upcoming expansion of the Cakebread tasting rooms complex. When meeting with the client, they expressed the desire for custom designed and manufactured tabletop lamps that could tell a story about the experience of wine. So each of the five lamps is inspired by an aspect of wine or the process of making wine. These Lamps will be manufactured in the Spring, when the tasting rooms are almost finished being built.

Project Ideation
The Bung Lamp
This lamp was inspired by the cork that winemakers use to plug big barrels in which the wine rests. These corks are called bungs. They have an interesting trapezoid shape that when stacked create a very cool base. The bungs in the base are intended to be made out of bronze. Bronze is a common material used in the exterior of the new tasting room extension. The shade, a circular shape, is made out of a light colored fabric and complements the spherical shape of the base.
The Barrel Stay Lamp
This lamp is inspired by the elements of the big wine barrels used in winemaker's cellars. The lamp is held up by barrel stays, which are the circular wood strips that make up a barrel. The barrel stays are connected by a steel ring inspired by the steel rings that join together stays on a wine barrel. The stem is connected to the frame by the steel ring also made of steel and hidden within the shade. The shade itself is styled after a bung, and fits snuggly between the barrel stays. The shade is a custom made either from fabric or  plastic such as ABS.
The Egg Shaped Lamp
This lamp is inspired by the elements of the production of wine. The new Cakebread fermentation house renovation, will house egg shaped wine fermentation tanks instead of traditional cylinder tanks. In honoring this egg shaped form, the base is also designed to look like an egg which has been cut in half. Each side of the base is made out of ceramics, connected by a brass stem. The shade is circular, made out of a light colored fabric.
The Magnum Lamp
This lamp is inspired by a Magnum wine bottle. The lamp base is made out of recycled Magnum wine bottle glass bottoms which are twice the volume size of a normal bottle of wine. Between the stacked magnum bottle bases is a brass X. This is a common design theme throughout the new Cakebread extension and is used to create a more interesting form for the base. The Xs also help support the brass stem, which starts at the base and extends to connect to the shade. The shade is a rectangle made out of a light colored fabric which contrasts yet complements the circular base.
The Logo Lamp
This lamp is inspired by the heritage of Cakebread Winery. The base is made out of a simple rectangular oak frame. Oak is a material that many of the existing interiors on the property are made from. It is supported by bronze Xs, a common design theme throughout the new Cakebread extension and a shape that the Cakebread family embraces. In the middle of the rectangular frame is a bronze metal band. This band has the Cakebread logo engraved into each side. The shade is a circular shape which will be made out of the same material as the linens the family used in their original tasting rooms.
